AXFORD PARK

Public BBQ

Tucked along busy Scarborough Beach Road, Axford Park punches well above its weight for such a compact space. The war memorial immediately draws your attention,a moving tribute to Thomas Leslie Axford, Victoria Cross recipient, with genuinely interesting historical details worth reading. Kids dart across the open lawn while families gather under the substantial gazebo, though you'll notice the road noise more than you'd like. The park's quirky charm lies in its unexpected details: a magnificent rare pine sporting enormous cones and its own warning sign, plus apparently three Pokemon gyms for the digitally inclined. Friday night food markets transform this modest green space into something special, offering excellent tucker that makes clever use of every square metre. Public toilets tick the practical box, though barbecue enthusiasts will be disappointed, there's no barbecue facility despite the perfect picnic setting. The City of Vincent's stewardship seems inconsistent, but locals clearly cherish this peaceful memorial space. It's particularly moving during Remembrance Day, when the park fulfills its solemn purpose as intended. A lovely little spot that deserves better recognition.
